PATIENT ADVOCACY
We routinely provide to the offices of Urologists, Oncologists, family physicians,
the Via Christi Cancer Resource Center, the American Cancer Society, at health
fairs, and at other health related events copies of our Us TOO Intl., Inc.,
Prostate Cancer Education and Support Network flyer for these offices to
hand to prostate cancer patients and any others interested in learning more
about our cancer, that explains our agenda and provides contact numbers of
chapter volunteer members.
We purchase CD copies of all presentations at annual National/International Conferences on Prostate Cancer for loan to our members. Other VCR copies have been provided to the Via Christi Cancer Resource Center to also be loaned from that facility.
A flyer has been produced that is passed out at meetings and at health fairs
that explains the origin of our chapter on April 11, 1994, identifies our
founders (retired pastor Ken Short and Urologist A. J. Farha of the Wichita
Urology Group), explains the involvement we have in our community and what
we have to offer in support to anyone desiring to learn more about prostate
cancer, provides our chapter website and our telephone number, and recognizes
those community organizations that provide us support.
We participate as volunteers at several health fairs and other health related
events to talk to men and anyone interested about prostate cancer, as well
as provide them at no cost an abundance of materials regarding our cancer.
We produce "Observations" of particularly important and significant prostate cancer treatment information collected from prostate cancer conferences, physician-to-patient Emails, and an abundance of prostate cancer information gleaned from authoritative publications, prostate cancer lists and websites, discussions with physicians, and any-and-all other reliable sources. These "Observations" are then made available to our membership and any others interested in learning more about prostate cancer in printed form as well as on a page on our chapter website. "Observations" to date include "VERY IMPORTANT! Prevent "FLARE" Before Beginning or Returning to Androgen Deprivation Therapy (ADT);" "A Wake Up Call To Men And The Women Who Care About Them;" "Prostate Cancer - Not To Be Taken Lightly!;" "Important Diet and Supplement Considerations In Our Fight Against Prostate Cancer;" "Androgen Deprivation Therapy (ADT) Following Recurring Prostate Cancer;" "An Example of Maintaining Prostate Cancer Statistics;" "My Experience Since 1996 With Androgen Deprivation Side Effects;" "Precautionary Measures When Bisphosphonates or LHRH Agonists Are To Be Administered;" "Shingles - A virus common to adults over age 60 (the same age levels as most diagnosed with prostate cancer) who formerly had chicken pox."
We have assembled a "Prostate Cancer Facts" pamphlet made up
of published material significant to better understanding prostate cancer.
This is made available to our membership and any others interested in learning
more about prostate cancer and made available at health fairs or other health
related events, advising them to use the information in the pamphlet in discussion
with their physicians.
